MASCOT AT THE END OF THE WORLD

Tested to work – in extreme conditions at the end of the world. MASCOT has equipped the expedition ”Ultima Patagonia” that is currently exploring one of the most impassable and hostile terrains of the world.
***
Just like the expedition, MASCOTs always seek new challenges to continue developing and producing the best workwear in the world. One of the most challenging places on our planet is the island of Diego de Almagro off the Chilean coast – and this is where MASCOT’s workwear is currently being “tested to work”. The island is a candidate for the world record of rainfall with 10 metres of rain annually – and is frequently being beaten up by winds near and above 100 km/h.

These extreme conditions are now an integral part of daily life for the French/Chilean expedition Ultima Patagonia. From the beginning of January and through February, 24 explorers with backgrounds as cavers, geologists, divers and biologist are on the hunt for matchless discoveries and scientific breakthroughs. The expedition is exploring the limestone islands of Western Patagonia for the seventh time — among the most startling discoveries from past expeditions are archaeological finds from Kawesqar Indians who have roamed the area for more than 6000 years, cave paintings, marble glaciers and new species. Last but not least the discovery of a gigantic cave with a whale cemetery, where the expedition found skeletal parts from a blue whale — in a cave located 37 meters above the Pacific’s surface…

This time, Ultima Patagonia focuses on Diego de Almagro — the southernmost of the islands. They have brought all sorts of relevant equipment, and in these insane weather conditions, the right equipment is simply a matter of survival. This includes everything from technical gear, sleeping bags and tents to the clothes that the explorers are donning when building base camp, examining caves, climbing mountains, rappelling and trekking in the rough terrain. This is where MASCOT enters. The Danish manufacturer of workwear has equipped the expedition members with a wide range of clothing — from antibacterial underwear to t-shirts, hoodies, belts, hats, pants and jackets:

— It is actually very simple. Without the right clothing you are dead, says explorer Natalia Morata through the rarely working satellite line from Diego de Almagro. She is a caver and an experienced explorer — and one among many loyal MASCOT dealers worldwide. She manages the shop «Natmor» in the Chilean capital Santiago and happily spends her holiday on the Patagonian island:

— To be and live on a deserted island is something special. The sheer feeling of going where no other man has gone before is incredible in this globalized era.

Along with the rest of the expedition, Natalia Morata will forever store the memories of “Ultima Patagonia” — and share the useful, scientific discoveries with the world. This also applies to MASCOT who will use the feedback from Diego de Almagro to the continued development of the world’s best workwear — tested to work in extreme conditions at the end of the world.

Mascot Workwear — outdoor assault course test

In yet another quest to test your workwear to the extreme, Jonathan Cole and Simon Harrington grab the latest Mascot range and head to an outdoor assault course in Hertfordshire.
Perhaps an assault course on a sunny, wet afternoon isn’t the first place you would expect to find Mascot’s latest range of workwear – but it proved to be a great place to test it. Pulling on our Vagos T-shirt, Almada trousers and Tavira Pilot jacket we took to the course, ready to tackle any obstacle it could throw at us!

After taking on tunnels, inclines and slaloms we found that every scrape associated with the assault course was absorbed with ease. The jacket proved to be extremely hard-wearing and practical – especially when the heavens opened! The real star of the show, however, was the Vagos t-shirt. When building up a sweat, as you often do on site, the specially designed material ensured that we remained comfortable. All in all, the range more than did its job on the course and will undoubtedly deliver on site.

Tavira Pilot Jacket
In the unpredictable British weather, you need to ensure that the jacket you are wearing can cope with everything that will be thrown at it. On the course we got to see first-hand how the Tavira Pilot coped against the wind and rain, and it has to be said – it did pretty well. The jacket’s waterproof properties combined with taped seams, fastening cuffs and quilt lining was enough to ensure that the wind and rain stayed well away, whilst we stayed toasty warm!
Almada Trousers
When it came to the trousers we were wearing on the course, we wanted the perfect blend of practicality and comfort – which is exactly what you need on site. With an abundance of pockets, Cordura reinforced knees and a hammer strap; the Almada work trousers certainly met all our practicality needs; but what about comfort? Well, the manufacturer’s use of breathable fabric meant that we didn’t over-heat and the use of hard-wearing material ensured we didn’t sustain any scrapes or bruises – with a boot cut design, they even looked pretty stylish!
Vagos T-Shirt
For us, this t-shirt really held its own on the assault course and proved how invaluable a moisture-wicking polo shirt can be. As we built up a sweat tackling various obstacles, the MascoDry wicking system dispelled moisture from the body and kept us from becoming victim to the discomfort and chafing of skin irritations.

Optimal thermal comfort

The lining of the MASCOT® Frontera jacket is made from Outlast® material, which gives the jacket the ability to continually regulate skin’s microclimate. As your skin gets hot, the heat is absorbed, and as it cools, that heat is released. Not too hot, not too cold, but «just right» – Outlast® material offers greater wearer comfort through proactive heat management.

Outlast® technology is not wicking technology, which manages moisture by reacting to your perspiration and pulling it away from the skin. Outlast® technology will proactively manage the heat while controlling the production of moisture before it begins. Outlast® technology was originally developed for NASA and carries the Certified Space Technology™ seal of approval.

Features & functions

In addition to wearer comfort, the MASCOT® Frontera is functional and suited to your profession. All seams are taped, there is a detachable lined hood (with drawstring), storm flap, numerous pockets including a smart phone pocket under the storm flap that can be accessed without having to open the jacket, and reflectors for added safety. The chest pockets have magnetic closures ensuring they can be easily opened with one hand and always close themselves so nothing falls out.
Certified Space Technology

In 2003, Outlast® technology was designated a Certified Space Technology™ by the Space Foundation, a national non-profit dedicated to promoting space endeavors. As the developer of Outlast® technology, Outlast received this prestigious seal of approval for the way in which its space technology enhances the lives of consumers.

Outlast® technology was originally developed for use in space gloves to protect against extreme temperature fluctuations. Outlast has continued to develop and test phase change materials and applications to make this Certified Space Technology™ available to more consumers around the world. Currently Outlast holds more than 96 patents with 59 pending. Over 300 brands in different countries use Outlast® phase change materials in their products.

«The broad range of use of Outlast® materials in consumer goods, from apparel to bedding, demonstrates an exceptional example of how mankind currently benefits from today’s space technologies and how our future generations can leverage these successful endeavors, as well.» — Steve Eisenhart, vice president of policy and public affairs for the Space Foundation.
